I've witnessed one attempt that doesn't seem to be completely successful, but
at least it makes the would-be stand mover think twice before taking it. (It
was the brainchild of one of our students.) Using a rather difficult to remove
type of paint (don't ask me!), he stenciled all of the new stands as follows:
"Stolen from the U of M School of Music." Front and back. Haven't found one
in a local church yet. But they have migrated to non-S.O.M. facilities. (The
ones they use on stage, for performance, tend to be locked away and only say
"property of...")

Another idea I've heard discussed was offering music stand - specifically to
be used in the practice rooms or in the dorm/apartment where they live - for
check out at the beginning of the year. The stand is marked with a serial
number and, at the end of the year, if the student fails to produce the stand,
the student is billed the cost of replacing the stand (including shipping).
This way, the school doesn't have to bear the cost of replacing music stands
every year.
