looks like i opened a real can of worms here... thank you all for your responses. i have picked up quite a few good tips and by the volume of messages that came back on this subject, i should have plenty of opportunity to try them all. no mystery is complete without a twist at the end so here it is. i tuned that piano again last night and the problem was not there. i am sure that it will return, probably an hour before a major recital, but for now the piano is sounding splendid. go figure, chris -Christopher D.
