This is a simple issue. If the recording engineer is asked to make a recording, schlepping all his gear there he charges an hourly rate plush mileage. It is NOT you job to tune outside pianos. Tuning one outside piano cost thedepartment at least two inside tunings. Consider the student's needs . You were hired to tune the department pianos. I tuned for the Department of Music but charged seperately pianos tuned for the Theatre Department. And on my own time. Salary lines should reflext your areas of responsibility. If I tuned for a department recital on non-departmental pianos I did it on my own time and charged the outside venue for the tuning. Often a professor or an organization will pay for the tuning not the piano owner. Who is the tuning important to? That is the payee. If there is no clear cut policy in p lace then write on and have it approved by the chair and department manager after talking to them about it. A memo then will be sent to all interested paries for clarification. Just my NSHO. (not so humble opinion) Newton PS This policy was spelled out to me when I joined the department. My primary responsibility was to tune for students, professors and inside recitals and concerts. Facility users of department spaces paid for tuning as well, that was the origin of the policy.
