Using geometry to compensate for weight is fine, but there are some distances involved that must be considered irrespective of hammer weight, such as room for key travel, space for the jacks when the hammer is held at check, etc. 17 mm knuckle distance is fine until used in conjuction with high ratio keys, then you end up with either very little blow distance or deeeeeeeeep key dip.
