Hi, In an ideal world piano techs would all be accomplished pianists, and "amazing" technicians. In the real world some are in that category and some are not. I don't think acquiring good playing skills should be discouraged, just as I believe that every pianist worth their salt should have atleast attempted to tune a unison.
