Generally, any stretching or bending beyond the elastic limit. Where it
won't spring back to it's original condition. The plastic deformation point
of the wire has been exceeded at the becket, coil, counter bearing, V bar,
bridge pins, aliquot, and hitch pins just by installing the wire in a
piano. If it gets stretched beyond the limit, like Conrad's example, it
really is dead.
