All very good. I might add my own rule, which adds to my peace of mind: Be ready and willing to go back to private work at a moment's notice, if a situation sours. Nothing is eternal. A situation is good until it isn't, and life's too short to struggle with the impossible. I'm still enjoying a honeymoon at Linfield College: head of the piano department is a superb pianist who loves my work, and has been through enough technicians to know the difference. She has worked for 20 years to improve the stock and get rid of the old hulks. There are only 32 pianos total, so I am not dependent on the college for my livelihood. And some little details (like benches hell-bent on "auto-destruction") have been neglected for long enough that people notice that something is getting done. The downside is the 70 minute drive to get there. At least, at this time, "attitude adjustment" is hardly needed at all. I just have to go with the flow.
