annealing brass in the oven

Hi Mark,
I was at a class, someplace, and someone annealed the
brass rail, with a portable torch. He used a wax
crayon, to determine the proper temperature.
I think I might have put out a query, wondering, if a
person put the rail in a self cleaning oven, and put
it on clean, would this accomplish the same thing. I
don't recall getting an answer.
Sorry I can't remember the temperature it had to be
brought to, or for how long. I do remember, checking
the flex of the rail, in a treated to untreated, and
it seemed to work.
As a side note, there was a real fear in the class,
that the sprinklers would be set off, as smoke from
the torch drifted to the ceiling.
Regards,
