Dear List,

I recently saw the second case in my career of treble string breakage due to
bridge misplacement. The strings in both cases, at note 88 were in excess
of 2 1/2 inches long. The strings would break before you reached the
desired pitch. We have a local salvage company that had a couple of truck
loads of Baldwins. An “R” that was in this batch had broken treble strings.
I happened to have my ruler with ruler with me and checked and sure enough
the bridge was in the wrong place. I sure feel sorry for the poor person
that ends up with this piano!
