I use Yamaha felt wedge mutes when tuning. I turn the mute around and press 
just in
front of the bridge pin with the blunt end.

I haven't compared the results of this to tapping with a metal object, but
it's handy (one already has the thing in one's hand) and it seems it would
be safe for the wire.
