This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Wim, The difference between DW and UW is friction. Decreasing friction will bring the numbers closer together, i.e. DW will decrease while UW increases. Those numbers you have sound fine (for some pianists!). Although I am currently revising my whole take on this issue. I am working with a faculty pianist, a great pianist who loves her home Kawai KG-6. She has always said to me that she likes a heavy piano. Until last week when I finally went to her house to tune it (a good friend of mine is her regular tech) I had always thought that I needed to interpret what she meant by heavy. "Because, hell, nobody likes a heavy action!" Wrong. She loves her piano and it weighs off generally in the 60-70 range with upweights generally in the 30-35 range. So.... as I said I am revisiting the generally accepted numbers. I think that I would rather have a bit higher DW and UW numbers if by doing so I could use less lead in the keys to achieve less inertia in the action. Always a trade off. From C1 - F2, the down weight is between 52 and 55 grams. The rest is between 47 and 50, with a few 45's and 46's in the 7th octave. Upweight is generally between 27 and 30 grams, with some as low as 25 and a couple as high as 34. The Piano Action Handbook says down should be 51-52 in the bass graduating to 47 in the treble, with up weights at 20. After Christmas I'm going to lube all centers and check for pinning. Hopefully I'll get better upweight measurements. Is this about what you guys are going for? BTW, is TW the difference between down and up, or am I missing something in the calculation?
