Don, Alan, et al, I ordered the #5050 back during our last discussion and filed the first section on the B in question, jumped through all hoops, repositioning the strings, seating everything, leveling strings, fitting hammers/strings, etc, etc, and while the sound improved, the problem still existed on a few notes and the piano is being returned. I, in effect, failed in my attempt with this file. My radius appeared similar to the original, no measurements were made. And before I did the work the bar was very rough, pitted and had some paint touching at some string terminations, so I felt I could improve it. But, I now wonder about front duplex and string angle going down to that V and the length of that front duplex length and it's affect. I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I am still on a quest for a cure. If anyone buys a file or finds a cure/formula I am all ears. My efforts on this particular piano with that particular file were, for the most part, unsuccessful. Thanks. P.S. I have been eyeing Mason & Hamlins with the V across half of the scale and notice major differences in design and wonder again about their front duplex termination materials, lengths, angles and such. They answered that the radii were 0.250" and 0.187". As these didn't seem reasonable to me, I bagged the idea. Thanks for pursuing this. Please let us know what you think of the 4456 file. I like the fact that it has both grits. Alan McCoy -----Original Message----- From: caut-bounces@ptg.org [mailto:caut-bounces@ptg.org] On Behalf Of Don McKechnie Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2004 2:15 PM To: caut@ptg.org Subject: Capo bar revisited List, In the January issue of the PTG Journal there is a O& A discussion regarding the capo bar. On page 20 there is a response from me regarding the capo/fret file that Bill Spurlock used to sell. I mentioned that the file is still available from Stewart-MacDonald. That is not the case. When I called the company the first time, I was told the file is still available. Since I wanted another one with the 150 grit, I placed an order. When I received the file, it was not the same file as the one Bill sold. (The file on the left of the photo - page 20 - is the one Bill sold) When I called Stewart-MacDonald about this problem I found someone more knowledgeable about their inventory. The type of file that Bill used to sell has been discontinued for some time. The problem with the similar files involves the radius. It is too narrow in my opinion for capos or duplex bearing bars. This includes all the catalog numbers that Lance Lafargue mentioned in the next response on page 20. Stewart-MacDonald does have a different file that holds some promise for capo filing. Their "Dual Grit Diamond File," catalog number 4456 should work well. I have since ordered this file but I have not had the opportunity to try it out. You can have a look at this file at the following link: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_supplies/Fretting_tools:_Fret_dress ing, _polishing/3/Diamond_Fret_Files.html When I gave permission to use my response on this topic I had requested the above explanation be added. I do not have an answer as to why it was cut. Please accept my apology if anyone has ordered the above mentioned files and found then unsatisfactory as well.
