Eric:

Interesting that you try to keep pianos matched in your performance
spaces.  I guess we don't have nearly as many 2 piano events as you do.
Most of the time when 2 pianos are used together it is for the
accompaniment of a concerto with the orchestral reduction.  In those
cases, they usually want the accompanying piano to be somewhat
softer/mellower.  The other advantage to having the 2 somewhat different
is it gives a choice for people doing different style programs.  A
Brahms player as opposed to a Rachmaninov player.  A while back I had a
player change pianos at intermission as his first half was Mozart,
Beethoven and the second half Prokofiev.  I really like 2 piano things,
I wish we had more of it.

Hi Barbara,

Here at the Cincinnati Conservatory we have 2 Steinway D's in Corbett
auditorium in addition to a Kawai EX which can be rolled directly across
the
backstage hall from Corbett Theater (and vice-versa with the Steinways).
We
also have 2 Steinway D's and a Bosendorfer Imperial in Werner Recital
Hall. 

I think it is important to have at least 2 large instruments in the hall
that are pretty well matched since it is fairly common (at least here)
to
have duo piano programs. We had problems in the past with mis-matched
pianos
but seem to have resolved that issue.

At Lehigh University, Bethlehem PA Baker Hall  One Steinway D, One
Steinway
B, One Yamaha C-3. Also one Steinway B is available from another room
and
another Yamaha C-3 is likewise available. I think ideally you would have
two
of each. We have to rent a second D for major 2 piano events. But we are
able to meet all other space and format needs in-house and keep
flexibility
