I don't know the school's policy, but I'll relate this story. I had an unnerving experience: a conductor put sheets of newspaper on the strings of a beautiful "B" (without asking), to simulate the sound of a banjo. Unfortunately, she wedged some of them under the dampers! I didn't find this out until after I had tuned for rehearsal that morning. Even more ironically, there were two pianos on stage, and the unvoiced 70's Yamaha C3 sounded quite like a banjo already!
