Hi Avery,

Be gentle with the mute. Insert only well enough to "stop" the sound of the
other strings.

I do not get "good" results tuning the outside strings to the center one
using mutes. My order is tune middle, move mute from bass side, tune bass
side, tune next note middle string, tune bass side of next note, tune
treble side of previous note. (e.g. a4 middle, a4 bass, a#4 middle, a#4
bass, a4 treble [with unison *open*]). 

When I do as Jim suggests the unison is often not as clean as I would wish
for, and I find stability suffers--perhaps I place my mutes in too hard?
