Alan, Barbara, I don't remember Scott mentioning this use (trichord bass on a D), but Vince and I experimented with it, and it worked well. We coupled the center and right strings only. It made a big difference. It's probably better to do away with those wound trichords (redesign) in favor of bichords, but couplers really do remediate the problems there. (i.e. tuning, "you can't quite get them to sound good together".) Tune just as Scott recommends for the plain trichords; Right, center with right, then left to the 2 coupled strings.
