Jeff, at the risk of sounding like a parent: NOW is the time to 
seriously consider hearing protection. Your hearing will start to take a 
gradual decline with age, regardless of your tuning technique. I, like 
you, prefer to tune softly without hard blows. But I have found that a 
quick jolt to a string has improved my unisons quite a bit. That jolt, 
and I'm guessing, is over 90db. Multiply that over one piano, numerous 
pianos during the day, etc.....
