Ric,

According to a former S & S service manager who was speaking off the record at the time, if the "removable" strut can be taken out with the strings under tension, then go ahead and remove it in order to do what you need to do.  If the strut cannot be removed with the strings under tension, then lower the tension and then take it out, do what you need to do, put it back, and bring the strings back up to tension.
