I no longer have the original email, but if I recall correctly this is about replacing a single string. I think you may want to send both David's AND Ron's measurements. Without the measurement of hitchpin to winding the string maker will calculate the best design for that individual string, but it may look out of place compared to those around it. That is, the winding may end up closer to (or farther away from, but probably closer to) the termination points than the surrounding strings. Of course if you're replacing a whole set this is what you'd want, but for a replacement I like to match the original string as closely as possible, the theory being that it will be a better match to the other strings tonally (and it looks better). I always figure the more information you can send the string maker, the better. Then they can decide what to use and what to ignore.

Also, J.D.Grandt in Ontario has a similar type tape measure as Arledge.

Artledge, I  believe, has a little tape measure modified for hooking on the hitchpin.   It's easy to measure from hitch to winding, length of winding.   Mic the inner core and core with winding.   That's all they need.

No! Hitch to speaking length bridge pin, and hitch to agraffe, capo, or plate pin. With unison#, core and wrap diameters, he'll calculate the stretch and position the windings accordingly.
