[CAUT] getting paid for non-university events

Rob,
I¹m not in exactly the same situation, but this is how it works for me.
We have a ³College Community Auditorium² which is one of those auditoriums
that technically isn¹t apart of the university, but is; If you know what I
mean. I just had a talk with the director of the auditorium about getting
paid better. The current situation is I¹m in a staff position at the school
of music so whatever work I do for other dept. is overtime pay for me.
Unless it¹s a SoM related event. My biggest issue is these groups are
professionals and people are paying to see them, but since I¹m a University
employee I can¹t bill the auditorium I only can turn in my hours and get
paid overtime. I never turn in less than 3 hrs. otherwise it¹s not worth it.
Of course I never work that full 3 hrs and they know that and they haven¹t
had an issue yet. I¹m doing it partly for the little extra money and it¹s
a convenience for them. Because of schedules I usually have to do it during
the day sometime so I have to make those hours up to the school of music
which isn¹t hard since there is always evening and weekend work. For the
school of music I¹m not allowed to go over 40 hrs. so if weekend or evening
work is involved I am able to leave a few hours early or what ever I¹m going
to be over. That¹s ideal for doing private work, but since I have to make up
my hrs. due to the work I did for the other depts. That takes a little away
from that. I would try to get them to pay you overtime for your work which
the other dept. has to pay.
