Jeff,

Thanks for the info. I can't quite see how it's constructed, is it like David I. described, spring loaded, etc.? Any chance of getting a close-up digital shot?

Here's yet another option to consider for quick, but not infinite, 
height adjustment.  We have a handful of these benches at UM as well, 
and they have held up well.
