Strikes me that we are digressing a bit and branching off in directions
that are not really relevant to the discussion.

In the context of defining what qualifications / skills / whathave you a
senior CAUT tech who is to head up a department should have, I think its
fair to say that the individual should be able to present a rather
advanced and varied skill set.

Its true that techs working under such a persons administration need not
this same set of skills, and can be very very good at individual
components of that set. Its also true that some University situations do
not see a need for such a head of department. Its also true that in
some instances this is actually true.

That said... for the Universities that have a real need for someone to
head up a piano technology department and be responsible for large scale
maintenance, repairs, help oversee purchasing, delegate work to junior
techs, deal with high level music situations of varied sorts.... then
such a certification would be a valuable aid in assessing any applicants
qualifications... along with their experience and other references.

It might also serve as a way of getting more universities to take their
piano departments maintenance needs and the techs who do the work more
seriously. And I think we all agree that major inroads are to be made
along those lines.

Cheers
RicB
