I think a more realistic option is a work-study student. Not without  
problems, as college age kids are not always the most responsible, and  
scheduling is hard with classes and rehearsals. But work study is  
subsidized by the federal government so that the cost to the  
department is typically under minimum wage. I would think a 10 hour a  
week work study could handle the situation, with the tech overseeing  
and covering when need be.
