I've had luck with Crescendo punching. 

Jon, you covered the glides?? Were they knocking or something? (I'm certainly not questioning you're abilities, but this sounds a little weird. Explain?)

I had this thumping noise on an L from the '70's. Replacing the impacted
front rail punchings did not quiet it enough for the player.

I ended up covering the bearing areas on the bottom of the key frame
and glides with bushing cloth.
