The guy at the hardware store is right not to use bleach on shellac. But the piano doesn't have a shellac finish. It's a lacquer finish. Ask him if the mold products he has can be used on that.

What product did he give you to use on shellac?

Thanks for all of the ideas. It is actually 2 Steinways I need to work on,
ne is almost sitting in the ocean in a summer cottage (Mansion) and the
ther one is in a house which has been remodeled and just the piano needs
leaning.
The dude at the hardware store didn't want me to use any bleach product on
n old shellac finish. So I've got something else to try. I'll let you
now how it works out.

I have run into this situation as well.

leach, to my understanding, is the only=2
0way that I know of to kill
old. If you use a product that has bleach in it, won't it affect the
inish of the piano?

sn't there another way to kill mold on piano parts without challenging
onventional wisdom about bleach and piano finishes?

The "mold remover" products you buy at the hardware store contain bleach.
've had pretty good success using one of those products. I don't know if I
ould vacuum the mold. It will stick to the inside of the vacuum hose, and
ou'll wind up with the stuff all over your car, or where ever you store
our vacuum cleaner.

 Hi,
I need to clean old mold out of a 1940 ebony Steinway.  I’ve heard to just
acuum off the old mold, clean it with a mild detergent solution, rinse &
ry.  Also noted that bleach is not the solution to use.

 Is this about right??
