OK but doesn't some energy get transferred back to the plate via the plate's
connection to the soundboard and rim.  That loose washer under the plate
bolt can certainly be set to vibrating.

There are no vibrations transmitted to the vertical hitch pins 
because the bridges
suck all the energy out of the strings and squirts it into the sounding
board.

It's how well the sounding board transfers the energy to the 
surrounding air and the
density of the air on any particular day that causes the plate to vibrate.
