Other pianos may have fewer leads, but add springs.

Subject: [CAUT] really heavy damper back action

Hey all,

I'm starting a new "rebuild" for a 1922 Mason and Hamlin model A. I was
taking out the dampers for restringing, and found the back action flanges
extremely heavy with some leads installed, probably new when installed.
I'm wondering why they were so heavy! Of course, I find the whole piano
way overbuilt with huge cheek-block screws, etc. and overall very
heavy...a good hundred pounds more than the 2 Baldwin R's we moved just
before. (why huge cheekblock screws?)

I'm sure this makes the touchweight way more heavy than it should be.
Should I remove the leads?

Thanks as always!

Paul
