Yes, and I put them back where they were. I thought it best not to mess with them w/o knowing how to make a positive difference.

Just curious: did this "A" have rear duplexes?  And if so, did you
keep them during restringing?

I've tuned a restrung "A" from that period with a generous backscale
length in the treble and  broad, flat plate shelf underneath, but no
rear duplexes.  The hitch pins are in a continuous line, which would
argue against them being part of the original design.
