Eric,
An interesting experiment would be to place a 1098 and a UP model in similar situations and have your successor's successor report on how well each one lasted.

We actually have a total of 231 pianos. It would be really nice to have that third position…

We didn’t purchase any Essex pianos…I don’t know who started that.

The breakdown of our purchase is as follows:

  Steinways

  3 Ds (1 Hamburg)

  20 Bs

  22 As

  22 Ms

  4 S

  10 1098s

  Bostons

  4 GP 178 grands

  10GP 163 grands

  19 UP 132 uprights

  51 UP 126 uprights

The UP 126 and UP 132 models are in practice rooms and classrooms and are proving to be very stable. They all arrived at about A-442 and I haven’t found one yet that has gone below A-440. Some of the practice room pianos haven’t been tuned yet but they are still functional with the factory tuning. Well…sort of.

Three sounds about right for 165 pianos. (Is that the right number?) Or was 165 the number of just the new pianos? We have 110 instruments and only me. It's a real big job.

How many Bostons and Essexs' did you also get? I saw some Boston upright boxes being unloaded in the CBS show. I wish you could have had more air-time to tell everyone how much work it is to "break-in" that many new pianos....Oh well, at least you got your 15 seconds of fame :>)

  Best of luck!

  Paul

  Paul,

In addition to myself, I have one full-time tech. and money to hire contract tunings for the practice rooms. Part of our “All Steinway” deal was to get a third full-time position but then the economic crisis hit and a hiring “chill” was put into effect. We hope to create this position when the economy thaws.

  Hi Eric.

How many assistants do you have there? I hope you're not all by yourself!

  Eric -
I thought that was a really well done piece on CCM - very positive for CCM, but especially so for Steinway and the All-Steinway School concept. Great PR piece for them.

  Hi All,

I just wanted to give everybody a heads-up that the long-awaited CBS Sunday Morning piece on CCM 's becoming an "All Steinway School" will be broadcast this Sunday, September 20 at 9:00 a.m. EST.

This story appeared in The New York Times and caught the eye of a producer at CBS Sunday Morning and the result is a 10 minute segment that is scheduled to air as part of the broadcast. Over a period of six months, extensive filming was done on the CCM campus, at the Steinway factory, and in the Steinway selection room. They shot hours and hours of footage and the segment will last only about 10 minutes so there's no telling what wasn't left on the cutting-room floor...watch and find out! I have no idea what to expect...
