I seem to remember that Roger Jolly, used old jean material cut into strips 
for this purpose.

You're working way too hard! Glue your felt or braid down
first. Then, with a propane torch and a heated icepick, burn
each hole out for screw clearance. Stinks like Uncle Bilious
(remember him?), but it's quick and relatively idiot resistant.
