[CAUT] When to restring...

Hi Jeff,

Actually I have, but the fingernail test seems to be best. If I could stick my fingernail inside the agraffe hole, I would. I’ve inserted a dental pick in and felt the roughness.

I used to just replace agraffes, but saw that after a few years some had noise. I wondered, why?? Paul’s method of treating the holes only takes about 2 hours now, the way I do it, but after five years or so I’ve never hear the “zing” that other (even brand new) agraffes sometimes get. The hole (at least the way I do it) ends up being bigger and rounded off more. So, the shape is better, and all the roughness is gone. Maybe it’s like a good radius on a v-bar.

Isn’t the inside of the agraffe just a “mini v-bar”?

Best,
Jim

Jim,
You ever use a magnifying glass on a resurfaced capo? I've just got to wonder how good it really needs to be to be a clean termination.

Good luck Paul.

Once again I’ll state that new agraffes always need the “Paul Revenko Jones” treatment. Just putting new agraffes on is like hanging new hammers without any voicing or mating. Use a magnifying glass and you’ll see. (But hearing is believing)

Best,

Jim Busby

I tried the McLube trick on the underfelt and capos on 3 grands yesterday, 2 Baldwin M's and a Steinway M in practice rooms, and it really made a big difference. I don't know why I never tried that before. Sure helped the string rendering.

I'm still on the fence about restringing this M in the shop, but our chapter meeting is this Sunday afternoon, so I'll get their input. Also, if I do, I'm still on the fence on doing the agraffe rehab, or just replacing.

Again, thanks for all your inputs so far...I'm sure I'll have more questions. Nobody can know it all, eh?

Paul
