Some formulations are made so that it mixes better with water, for cosmetics use. Anyway, what I got is "NOW Solutions" brand, a 7 fl oz jar labeled "pure lanolin" "100%pure". Looking at the description on the label, it seemed to be pretty much what comes out of the wool, probably with minimal processing to get rid of the dirt and whatnot. And when I opened it, it had that unmistakable sheep smell. I expect anhydrous would work just the same, as would many other formulations. But probably some of them wouldn't, so I stuck with a natural product on the theory that I would put back what had been taken out, and couldn't go too far wrong.
