Dennis is right, go to BEMF if you have time. It's held every two years (next in June 2011) in and around Boston, not at Harvard. Just as important as the exhibit is the opportunity to hear some of these copies well played. But some builders have dropped out of the exhibition because of the cost, and the best ones don't need the exposure.

I got behind on this discussion, but if they are serious maybe they would send you and a piano faculty member to the Boston Early Music Festival at Harvard. That is the best place to see all the choices and meet the makers first hand. Our school sent me when we were in the market and it was an awesome experience I will never forget.

  good luck and have fun,

    Greetings,
The school is considering acquiring a new fortepiano or a pianoforte. The first question is which era, as they are not homogenized like pianos. Another question is style of action, and yet another question is durability, I don't want to get a prima donna instrument that gets weird every time it is moved.
I also don't want to re-invent the wheel, so was hoping that other Cauts that deal with the 18th century in an academic environment would offer a suggestion or two.
    Thanks,
