A concert artist allowed his take on complaining performers: He thought that the worst were those who were on their way up or on their way down. Following along the same lines as John's explanation, the experienced players who had been around awhile easily coped with adversity such as poor venues, substandard pianos, bad weather, etc and were easy to please. However, the newer artists who were unsure of their ability or the older ones who were nearing the end of their career seemed to be the complainers.
