That would be a good plan, if only the logistics involved would allow it.  The afternoon before the piano will be INside (at 70 degrees).  The afternoon of the performance it will probably be at least 80 outside.  Nevertheless, your suggestion may well be the best way to go.

Tune it the afternoon before when its about the same temp as the next day.
Cover it overnight. Touch up at 1.
