A change in wire size won't change that. A longer speaking length, which won't be possible, with plain wire, or putting a few unisons of wrapped strings down there is the only thing that will help. About a 4 or five note transition bridge would be ideal, but that's unlikely to happen. Putting a couple of wrapped bichords on the original bridge won't be anywhere near ideal, but it will be less miserable than what is currently there. You'll also have to move and add hitch pins, and will orphan a couple of tuning pins in the process, which will surely horrify someone.` This is a VERY common problem that comes up on these lists every month or so.
