Subj: Re Accu-tuner Alas, I confess to still being in the stone-age, not having bought an Accu- tuner to assist me in the daily "tuning grind". I do not, however, consider them a less than valuable tool -- to the contrary, I have defended them (sometimes passionately) with Faculty members here at Oberlin that built in prejudice towards their use, especially pointing out to them how they have been so useful in creating fairer and higher test standards within have been so useful in creating fairer and higher test standards within Oberlin that have built in prejudice towards their use, especially pointing out to them how they have been so useful in creating fairer and higher test standards within PTG. I would take issue with those, however, who do not commit themselves to tuning entire pianos from day to day aurally to continue honing that fundamental skill, one, in fact, that we use to judge the effectiveness of the Accu-tuner itself. I know, for sure, with my own tuning that each year I seem to acquire a little more finesse. It is subtle and does not knock off big chunks of time or account for big increases in accuracy as with tuning in the early years. But it always amazes me that the ability to get the "perfect" partial coincidence with the first hammer manipulation is more evident every new tuning year. Aurally Yours, Ken Sloane
