Re: broken bridge pin
What is needed is a broken screw extractor which is a steel tube 1/4"
in diameter that has saw teeth cut at both ends so that the cutting action
happens with the drill in reverse. This cuts a plug out around the screw end
and will extract the screw when the cutter cuts into the screw. These
extractors are available from several wookworking catalog cmpanies.
When is needed next is a 1/4" plug cutter to cut a plug of maple
witht he grain oriented to match that of the bridge. This plug can be glued
in with CA or any other good glue like epoxy. The plug is then cut flush to
the bridge, drilled and notched and pinned.
These cutter come in three sizes up to 5/8". I have the two smaller
sizes and have used them to extract broken hinge screws in lids, rims and one
action screw. These tools a great, and the only tool that will do this job
well and easily. They are also fragle in that they are made of _very_ hard
steel. The cutters do not have much of a set to the teeth and so will get
VERY hot very quickly, will burn and loose their temper quickly. (Somewhat
like myself.)
