Twisting new bass strings

Thanks everyone for your input. Two items I would like to present:
1. If you twist them initially, what happens down the road, say ten years or
so, when
you need to enliven them, and
2. In my case, only the bass strings were replaced. As lively as these Mapes
strings sounded, I would think that a brighter sound would clash with
their higher pitched and
   aged counterparts.

PS. Are there any string makers out there to supply tech data on the effect
of twisted strings?
