Does steaming a hammer lessen the grooves at all? The logical inference from my question is that at times steaming hammers might forestall hammer replacement. Is this a possibility? I am under the impression that grooves are cut rather than compressed into felt. If so, steaming seems of doubtful value as regards grooves. I can see possibilities for steaming damper felt, especially the bass wedges in old uprights. Arlie D. Rauch, Piano Technician Glendive, MT
