According to the Pianotek catalog, schraffing, long used by Europeans,
is a process which involves the roughing of the core wire to ensure the
windings stay more securely in place, thus virtually eliminating the
necessity of twisting the strings upon installation.

Subject: Steaming Hammers

I am a new subscriber, and this steaming process intrigues me. I will
probably try it, but need to know more.

Does steaming a hammer lessen the grooves at all? The logical inference
from my question is that at times steaming hammers might forestall hammer
replacement. Is this a possibility? I am under the impression that
grooves are cut rather than compressed into felt. If so, steaming seems of
doubtful value as regards grooves.

I can see possibilities for steaming damper felt, especially the bass
wedges in old uprights.
