Our concert hall piano (a 1975 Hamburg Steinway model D)has recently been removed from it's "spider" dollie. (This was due, in part, to the complaints by some of the patrons that the dollie looked BAD?!) Anyway, I think the acoustical effect has been improved due to the "more solid" contact of the legs with the hard-wood stage floor. It is on conventional casters, which are soon to be replace by those "gaudy" 4" double-wheel brass mothers! The dollies sell for around $750 for three (two with brakes). The shorter legs, from Hamburg (required to compensate for the larger casters), were just purchased for $1,500!! I'll be curious to see what effect THIS will have on the tonal production. We now have an extra set of these "monster casters" if anyone is interested in purchasing them, we'll take the highest reasonable offer.
