from the NH Chapt "Granite Action" 1/91: Each December, as my hands acclimate
to cold dry weather, their tips shrink and crack at the corners of the nails.
Given the high concentration of nerves at these points, it's a real pain,
especially for the left hand which does all the banging. Of course hand
lotion is good preventative medicine, but should this condition sneak up on
you, the best relief is one of the hydrocortisone acetate preparations. In
the patent medicine section of your neighborhood pharmacy.
