Subject: Time: 8:54 AM OFFICE MEMO Re univ tech to piano formula Date: 6/14/95 Barb Richmond Excuse an over-reaction on my behalf to comments about the "Guidelines for Effective Institutional Piano Maintenance" (can you say that fast three times), but -- kidding aside -- the document was prepared by the College and University Technicians Committee to fill a void. Technicians working at many different institutions were getting similar responses from administrators in regard to requests for more help/money. Administrators were always asking, "Is there some sort of professional standard as to how many technicians are required to take care of "x" number of pianos, and how much money is needed to do it?" So, to make a long story short, enter the "Guidelines"; and believe me, it took an incredible amount of volunteer hours, phone calls, mailings, disagreements, head scratching, etc. to come up with what we have. And for some more immediate perspective, the current and past president of PTG have urged the committee to review the "Guidelines". However, both of these presidents heartily approve the current document and have used it to promote PTG. Unfortunately the committee has not been very active this year, but for those of you out there that feel some revision of the current document is appropriate, get in touch with Leon Speir and ask to be put on the committee for this coming year. A new committee will be formed at Albuquerque and a list of charges presented. I think it is unlikely that the Board would approve the hiring of an outside firm to modify the document; and, personally, I feel it is not only not necessary but would not serve our interests and the interests of our clients (schools) as well as we can serve them ourselves. If you made it this far in the post, thanks for listening. Ken Sloane, Oberlin Conservatory
