I think I understand. i.e.-we can hear what is not really there but cannot
hear what is really there?  :-)

  Seriously I believe that it is these 'intangible' harmonics (I call them)
that makes a "pure" note/tone on a stringed instrument,piano or otherwise,
pleasing and the lack of them  in the same note on an electronically
generated instrument sound flat/lifless.
 Just an opinion and not based on scientific study.
