Jeff and All, The main thing I want to contribute concerning strip muting is that I use a standard tapered temperament strip for the centre section and a shorter piece of the same material for the bass. However, I use a length of uncut butt felt for the treble, especially on uprights. It inserts easily, using a hemostat. I don't seem to have any particular trouble with unwanted harmonics probably because I just ignore them.
