Hello John Piesek,

The hammer return springs on a vertical piano should be just strong enough
to help the hammers overcome the center of gravity upon rebounding off the
strings. Normally they are adjusted to a forty-five degree angle from
vertical. It is easiest to do this with the spring rail on the bench, by
inserting the angled end of a capstan screwdriver into each spring 's coil
and bending the spring around it. The short springs are often far too
strong, and this may also distort the shape of the spring rail, causing
problems with the damper wires.

I hope this is helpful.

P..S. There is never time to do the job properly, but there is always time
to do it over!
