I second Eric's answers to Barrie's question.  In addition, some of the
old backcheck wires are so old-thick-stiff that they are practically
impossible to regulate.
Also I might presume to mention that sometimes the placement, angle and
height of the backcheck should be changed if a different style hammer is
used and/or the old backchecks were in the wrong place and this can be
done all at once by removing the old backchecks, plug up the holes and
start backcheck installation over from scratch.
