Damper felts

Dear Ron and List,

If I had been reading the e-mail at the time, I would have also suggested
changing the felt, and using Yamaha grand damper felt on the Steinway. I
routinely use the Yamaha felt with good results. Usually the GP felts
fit the best, but it is a good idea to keep an assortment of the CF
felts on hand as well.

I don't bother with the red backing felt; this felt
works great glued directly to the damper heads. Makes for a simpler job
as well. Bill Spurlock makes and sells a tool which is perfect for
making precise cuts in the single, bichord, and trichord strips. It is a
block of hard plastic which has channels routed in it to exactly fit the
Yamaha felt, and kerfs to accomodate a cutting blade. The one I have is
his older model made of wood, but it works great. To cut the flat (well,
actually creased) felt strips, I use a common felt guillotine cutter.

I'll betcha this new felt will do the
trick. Good luck with it.
