To add somewhat to the confusion, Steinways BIG contribution is generally
regarded as COMBINING an overstrung bass with a full iron plate in a
grand piano. The date commonly given for their producing such a piano
is 1855, although the design may have been patented in 1859. I always
found it interesting that while they went to using full plates in their
grands, they continued using 3/4 plates in their uprights for many years.
