Dear Matt...
    some friendly advice....
if you're really going to get into
all this, you should buy and study
"Piano Servicing, Tuning & Rebuilding"
by Arthur Reblitz...about $20.00
and later "the Educated Technician" by
Ed McMarrow
from Piano Tech 1-800-347-3854
(they take "plastic")

MEMORIZE all the parts and names
and what they look like....
Get to know these books by
heart....read them first and then
start on your piano....

Hey,....you'd have to do the same thing
to restore a lawn-mower or VW Beatle...

{it should not
be necessary to shave the jack....you
tap it directly on top ....oh so gently
to get it to angle over so it is centered
in the fly window...}

You might want to start taking tuning
and servicing lessons from a local ptg
tuner/technician....look in the yellow
pages of your local phone book....
find who are the rebuilders in your
area and get to know them.....find
out about local ptg meetings....etc.
look for classes taught in local
universities on tuning or from a local
community college....ask around and find
the best....you'll find alot more
problems as you go w/ your K & B ....

The Reblitz book is often used as a
text in many colleges....

The PTG will help you alot...sounds
like you need more than online help....
and maybe you need to look for advice
from some fine crafts people in your
area as the advice you were given was
not good....(IMHO)
